Why Does Experience Matter in Asian Wedding Photography?

The vibrant wedding rituals and ceremonies with loud striking colours and unique sounds accompanying ancient customs make an Asian wedding stand out. These weddings have a long history and are steeped in tradition. That’s why Asian wedding photography is often regarded as a distinct genre.

Personally, I feel that one must have a decent knowledge of Asian wedding customs to be considered an acceptable Asian wedding photographer. To capture the high feelings and colours of the event, even experienced and well-versed photographers must plan their work ahead of time.

In this post, I’ll share my expertise as a seasoned wedding photographer in London, based on my extensive experience in the business.

Understanding the specifics and flow of Asian weddings

A competent Asian wedding photographer must be well-versed in the region’s culture and customs to get a feel for the wedding process and its associated traditions. I like to speak with the couple and develop a photo shoot plan to be aware of the significance of various events and circumstances and stay ready to capture the most important moments.

The distinct feature of an Asian wedding

For me, one of the most distinctive features of Asian weddings is the Rukhsati, which occurs at the conclusion when the bride is formally handed over by her parents and family. In most cases, the bride is leaving home for the first time, so it’s no surprise that this moment may be emotional. For me, it’s the most enjoyable part since everyone is relaxed and has forgotten I’m there, so capturing those sentiments is wonderful.

Getting to know the wedding venue

It is critical for a good Asian wedding photographer to be acquainted with the location. Knowledge of the venue’s layout and ambience always aids me in determining the right lighting and planning photo shoots that take advantage of the environment. I always recommend beginner photographers visit the venue ahead of time to get a good handle on organising photo sessions effectively.

Being inconspicuous and attentive

In some instances, the presence of photographers may appear invasive and should be avoided. The sound of cameras clicking can be distracting, particularly when capturing intimate moments between the couple. For example, a loud beep might spoil a beautiful wedding kiss.

In my opinion, a wedding photographer must remain non-intrusive to allow couples to express themselves and stay natural. On the other hand, an experienced and well-equipped wedding photographer will never lose sight of the couple, following them like a shadow. That is why, as I previously stated, being appropriately prepared and visiting the venue ahead of time is so important.

However, the greatest moments are always unplanned. It takes years of experience, industry knowledge, attention, and creativity for a photographer to capture those spontaneous and emotional moments without a blink, no matter how much they may surprise them.

The peculiarity of a Tamil wedding ceremony

As a seasoned Tamil wedding photographer in London, I understand the significant distinctions between weddings held in the south of India and those in the north. Typical Tamil weddings are more about preserving ancient practices and traditions than being extravagant. For Tamil people, the spiritual significance of marriage comes first, rather than all of the pageantry and show.

Kalyanam is another name for Tamil weddings, and they are always full of enjoyment and light-hearted moments. However, there will be no compromise on the actual ceremony, as a Tamil wedding is a major celebration with far-flung relatives in attendance.

I am a firm believer in love and family connections. Tamil Hindu weddings are filled with emotions, colour, and tradition and always fascinate me. Every aspect, from the delectable South Indian cuisine to the ancient rituals, contributes to ensuring that each second is engaging.
